What is a facial plastic surgeon?

Updated: Jun 17, 2019

What exactly is a facial plastic surgeon? One of the most confusing issues facing patients when choosing a surgeon is what is the difference if he/she is board-certified? It is important to seek a surgeon who is board certified in the field where you are considering surgery. In the face and neck the area of expertise is facial plastic surgery. Facial plastic surgeons have significant training and experience operating in the facial, head, and neck areas because they specialize in those areas. Many in fact are board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery where the most extensive surgeries in these areas performed. For example, cosmetic plastic surgeons during facelift surgery aim to prevent injury to the facial nerve by avoiding it, On the other hand, head and neck surgeons often must dissect many branches of the nerve intentionally to remove a tumor from the parotid gland deep to the area of facelift surgery, while protecting the facial nerve from injury at the same time. This type of experience helps the facial plastic surgeon protect the nerve while doing elective cosmetic surgery. The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers additional board certification for surgeons in this specialty. Dr. Wenzel has double board certification from both specialty boards, having passed the rigorous requirements of experience and examination required of specialty board members. Tip:

Before proceeding with any elective cosmetic procedure, rather than trusting word of mouth or experience from a few people, check out the credentials of the person doing your procedure. Are they a board-certified specialist in the area where you will be having surgery?
